The Province of Noord-Brabant is situated in the southern part of The Netherlands, and covers an area of about 5000 km2. The province counts a bit less than 2.5 million inhabitants, of which by far the most live in urban areas. The Province deals with those matters of importance which transcend the borders of individual councils, mainly Municipalities and Water Boards. It encourages collaboration between councils, represents the region before central government and controls the distribution of various government funds. Examples of cross-council responsibilities are spatial planning, health risks, and environmental quality, for which already information services are operational. Both the air quality in the province and the bathing water quality of the lakes incidentally locally drops below health risk thresholds.
